Discussing the English Major at My Alma Mater

Discussing the English major at Franklin & Marshall College.

This Tuesday, I returned to Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to discuss the career paths available to undergrad English majors as part of an alumni panel. The panel featured six alumni pursuing a variety of careers--from library sciences to marketing--and of course, I spoke about breaking into the publishing industry and freelancing. We discussed first jobs, networking, maintaining confidence, and how to keep creative after college (a subject very dear to my heart). I also talked about launching an open mic series, building communities, and forming writing groups.

The event was a great success, with a record number of attendees, and I met some wonderful students eager to start their publishing careers. If anyone knows of any opportunities I can recommend to them, I hope you'll leave a comment!

This weekend, the Merchant's House Museum continues its yearly tradition of offering candlelight ghost tours of the historic nineteenth century home. Eight people died at number 29 East Fourth Street, and some say their spirits still linger here today. In fact, The New York Times has called the Merchant's House Museum "Manhattan's most haunted house." I will be assisting with the ghost tours on Friday and Saturday, the 23rd and 24th. Tours are offered at these times:

Friday, October 23 & Saturday, October 24
Super Spooky Tour (includes 4th Floor Servants’ Quarters): 6:30, 8 & 9:30 p.m. $35
Spooky Tour: 7, 7:30, 8:30, 9 p.m. $25
MHM Members $15 all times.

Additionally, on Sunday, October 25th, I will be reprising the role of Gertrude Tredwell during our annual From Parlor to Grave: 1865 Funeral Reenactment and Graveyard Procession. I will be dressed in period mourning, as shown above on the left, as we reenact the 1865 funeral of patriarch Seabury Tredwell. Tickets can be purchased here.

Last night marked the book birthday of Weird Girl and What's His Name! I've been working on this novel with author Meagan Brothers at Three Rooms Press for more than a year, and I could not be more delighted for her. The launch party at Cornelia Street Cafe was perfect; the room was packed, the books were flying off the sales table, and friends, fans, and colleagues were so happy to be celebrating this phenomenal story. It was a triumphant night.

Though its official release isn't until Tuesday, copies of Weird Girl and What's His Name have been spotted all over. Copies can be found at Book Culture, Barnes and Noble NYC, McNally Jackson, and of course, Amazon, to name just a few. Found a copy at your local bookstore? Share a picture below!
